This is the privacy policy for wpbob.com, a personal site run by Bob Cristello. It explains what information is collected when you visit, why, and what you can do about it.

The short version

  • There are no accounts, comments, contact forms or newsletters here, so you never give this site your name or email.
  • The site uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which articles get read. That uses cookies.
  • The web host keeps standard server logs, including your IP address, for security and to keep the site running.
  • Nothing is sold, and there are no ads or ad trackers.

Who runs this site

wpbob.com is run by Bob Cristello, who is responsible for the personal information collected here. For any privacy question or request, email bob@bobcristello.com.

What’s collected and why

Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics 4 to understand how it’s used: how many people visit, which pages they read, how they arrived (a search engine, a link, directly) and roughly where they are and what device they use. The purpose is to see what’s useful and write more of it. It isn’t used to identify you, and it isn’t combined with anything else.

Google Analytics sets first-party cookies, usually named _ga and _ga_<ID>, that last up to two years and let it recognize a returning browser. Google states that Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. Google processes this data on the site’s behalf. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services and Google’s privacy policy.

To opt out, block cookies for this site in your browser, use a content blocker, or install Google’s Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. The site works exactly the same either way.

Server logs

Like every website, wpbob.com runs on a web server, hosted by Hostinger, with Hostinger’s content delivery network in front of it. Every request is logged automatically: your IP address, the page requested, the time, your browser’s user agent and the referring page. If you use the search box, your search terms are part of the requested address and appear in the logs too.

These logs are used to keep the site secure and working, for example to spot and block attacks. They aren’t used for marketing and are kept only as long as the host’s log rotation allows. See Hostinger’s privacy policy.

Search Console

The site is registered with Google Search Console, which reports how wpbob.com appears in Google search results: searches, impressions and clicks, in aggregate. It doesn’t add anything to the site or set any cookies.

Cookies

The only cookies set for visitors are the Google Analytics cookies described above. WordPress sets its own login cookies, but only for the site’s administrator, never for readers.

What isn’t here

  • No comments, contact forms, newsletter sign-ups or user accounts
  • No advertising, ad networks or retargeting pixels
  • No social media widgets, share buttons or embedded videos that track you
  • No fonts or scripts loaded from third-party servers, apart from Google Analytics

Articles link to other websites, such as security advisories and vendor pages. Those links open in a new tab, and those sites have their own privacy policies.

Sharing

Your information isn’t sold, rented or traded. The only parties that process it are the two services that make the site work: Hostinger (hosting and server logs) and Google (analytics). Information may also be disclosed if required by law.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, including under the GDPR in the EU and UK and under US state laws such as California’s, you may have the right to:

  • ask what personal information is held about you, and get a copy
  • ask for it to be corrected or deleted
  • object to or restrict how it’s used
  • complain to your local data protection authority

Since this site doesn’t know your name or email, there’s usually little that can be tied to you. Analytics data is pseudonymous and held by Google. To make a request, email bob@bobcristello.com. You’ll get a reply within 30 days.

Where the GDPR applies, analytics and server logs are processed on the basis of legitimate interests: understanding how the site is used, and keeping it secure.

Security

The site is served only over HTTPS, runs a minimal, hardened WordPress setup, and has as few third-party components as possible. No system is perfectly secure, but collecting as little as possible is the best protection there is.

Children

This site is written for WordPress professionals and isn’t directed at children. It doesn’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.

Changes

If what this site collects changes, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change.
